The Benefits of Lymphatic Massage Post-Cosmetic Surgery: Why Regular Sessions Matter
Undergoing cosmetic surgery is a significant decision, often entailing meticulous planning and careful consideration. Post-surgery recovery is a crucial phase that determines the ultimate success of the procedure. Among the various strategies to enhance recovery, lymphatic massage stands out for its myriad benefits. At the VIP Clinic, we specialise in pre- and post-operative care, with our expert, Morgan, leading the way in ensuring patients achieve the best possible outcomes.
The Role of Manual Lymphatic Massage in Recovery
Lymphatic massage is a gentle, specialised form of massage that encourages the natural circulation of lymph through the body. The lymphatic system is part of the immune system and helps remove toxins and waste from bodily tissues. Post-surgery, this type of massage can be particularly beneficial for several reasons:
Reduces Swelling and Bruising Cosmetic surgery often results in swelling and bruising due to the body's inflammatory response. Lymphatic massage helps to alleviate these symptoms by promoting the drainage of excess fluids and reducing inflammation.
Speeds Up Healing By enhancing circulation and lymph flow, lymphatic massage accelerates the healing process. Improved lymphatic drainage helps to clear out cellular debris and deliver nutrients more efficiently to the affected areas, fostering quicker recovery.
Prevents Infection Efficient lymph flow is crucial for a robust immune response. Lymphatic massage can help bolster the immune system, thereby reducing the risk of post-operative infections.
Enhances Comfort Post-surgical discomfort can be significantly reduced with regular lymphatic massage. The gentle, rhythmic movements soothe the body and help alleviate pain and tenderness in the surgical areas.
The Importance of Regular Sessions
Consistency is key when it comes to lymphatic massage for post-surgery recovery. Here’s why regular sessions are important:
Optimal Results: Regular sessions ensure continuous support for the lymphatic system, providing steady improvements in swelling, bruising, and overall comfort.
Maintenance of Health: Consistent lymphatic drainage aids in maintaining a healthy immune response and preventing complications such as fibrosis, where scar tissue forms around the surgical site.
Sustained Well-Being: Regular massages contribute to a sense of well-being and relaxation, crucial for mental and emotional recovery post-surgery.
Recommended Frequency
For optimal results, we recommend starting with two to three lymphatic massage sessions per week for the first few weeks post-surgery. As healing progresses, the frequency can be gradually reduced to once a week, and eventually to a maintenance schedule as advised by your therapist.
A common question we are asked is how soon after the procedure can we get booked in?
You can book your sessions as soon as you want after your procedure always check with your consultant first as all medical practitoners ogive different advice. You will be required to lie down on the treatment bed on ideally your back and if patients can't lie face down this can be done on your side/ seated. The average is 3 days - 1 week depending on how you are feeling and your pain levels. Some companies offer the massages as part of your package so ensure you get these in too.
